What Are the Signs My Battery Needs Replacing?
Car batteries in Ghana have a natural lifespan of 1.5 to 2 years, although extreme heat and abuse can shorten the battery life. Regardless of your car battery’s age, there are several signs that your battery needs to be replaced. Contact Kem-D for a free and a quick battery test and a replacement of the right battery for your car.
- Trouble Starting: If you haven’t driven your car in a while, it is normal for your car to require a jump-start. But if you frequently need to jump-start your car or your car is often slow to start, your battery may need to be replaced. Contact Kem-D Batteries and Tyres for a new battery.
- Dim Headlights or Interior Lights: The headlights and interior lights in your car should shine brightly and consistently. If they’re dim or unsteady, it’s likely due to a failing battery.
- Electrical Components: Some parts of your car like the windows, locks, and the radio are powered by your car battery. If these components work sluggishly, the battery is often the culprit.
- Sulfuric acid Scent: Car batteries have sulfur inside, but you shouldn’t be able to smell it. Damage to the battery can release the sulfur, causing a terrible smell. Some people notice the smell when sitting inside the car, but others may not notice it until they open the hood. Don’t ignore the smell, contact Kem-D Batteries and Tyres to help you out or contact your technician.
- Corrosion on the Battery Poles: The positive and negative terminals of your battery should look clean. They are corroded if you see a white grit on them. Little corrosion can be cleaned but severe corrosion requires replacing the battery and the terminals.
- Swollen Battery: Your battery can sustain damage from extreme heat. You might notice the battery is swollen. This is a sign of permanent damage to the car battery and requires a replacement from Kem-D.
- Battery Warning Light: If you start your car and your car battery light remains on, it is an indication that your car’s electrical system is not getting enough voltage. This is mostly due to a faulty battery, alternator and its components. Get this checked immediately as this can cause your vehicle engine to go off in the middle of the road. Contact Kem-D for assistance
Should I Buy a New Car Battery Myself?
Yes, it saves money to buy a battery by yourself. Just contact Kem-D and have your battery delivered to you, to a contact or to your mechanic. A shop like ours can determine what type of car battery you need and replace it with ease.
Do I Need a Regular (Flooded) Battery or AGM Battery?
- A regular flooded battery is a traditional lead-acid battery. These batteries are the industry standard for cars and trucks.
- An absorbent glass mat battery ( AGM) is a newer type of battery that tolerates heat better than flooded batteries and provide more power. It isn’t yet the standard for car batteries and is much more expensive.
If your car has a regular flooded battery, you can buy either a regular flooded battery or an AGM battery. However, a car built with an AGM battery should only use an AGM battery, as the AGM’s charging mechanisms are incompatible with a flooded battery.
It is also critical to buy a correctly-sized battery for your car. Check your owner’s manual or talk with our technicians to determine the appropriate battery size for your vehicle.
How Do I Make My Car Battery Last Longer?
- Reduce short trips. Short car rides prevent your car’s battery from fully charging.
- Keep your car battery tightly fastened using the hold down clamp.
- Turn off all lights and electricals when you get out of your car.
- Control corrosion by using anti-corrosion washers and keeping your terminals clean.
- Test your car battery on regular basis.
- Do not use electronics with the engine turned off.
- Do not move your car battery from one car to the other.
- Tell your mechanic to take car of your car battery incase you have to leave your car at the mechanic shop.
- Do not use your car battery to jumpstart a bigger battery.
